For more than a decade, the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and an intrepid band of citizen activists have blocked construction of an open-pit gold mine on the pristine east bank of the Menominee River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
My wife and I own a cottage about 25 road miles from the potential mine site, and my wife has deep roots in the area, so it was natural for me to document the tenacious, and so far successful, local effort to stop the project.
You can watch some (pretty short) film clips on my project website and read updates about the campaign to stop the mine on Facebook.
Members of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin have a cultural affiliation with the proposed mine site that dates back thousands of years. (Excerpt from the documentary film "More Precious than Gold").
